It’s your Decision

Sometimes we just want to put it off, let someone else decide, ignore it in the hope that the decision will either resolve itself or simply disappear, right? Or sometimes we must be the ones to make the decision, have full understanding of all the possibilities and maintain control of the outcomes. Neither scenario is realistic or sustainable. Because decision-making can sometimes demand a lot of energy from us to be present, alert and thorough in our thinking –  we can be tempted to bypass or outsource the process for the sake of ease and comfort. And because decision-making involves confronting our relationship with uncertainty, we can be tempted to try to manipulate the outcome so we can live with more certainty. We unwittingly put stumbling blocks in our own path either by dropping the ball of responsibility or trying to hold all the cards of control. This will cause pain. And this is why I have honed my niche to coach people in the decision-making process because when faced with these challenges, we need support to explore the third way of acknowledging the pitfalls and exploring the possibilities.

What will I gain from the decision making process?

When faced with a decision, one motivating factor to taking steps forward is to think of the benefits of both the process and reaching a conclusion. Focusing on the feelings of satisfaction, clarity and confidence that you know are coming your way will spur you on much more than thinking what could go wrong or what people think.

You will gain self-awareness by engaging in a process of self-reflection and evaluation. This helps understand your values, preferences, and priorities more clearly.

Each choice, whether it leads to success or failure, provides valuable lessons, as you learn from experience. These lessons contribute to greater self-awareness and wisdom.

You will build your confidence Making decisions, especially difficult ones, can be intimidating; but the act of deciding builds confidence. When you make choices and take responsibility for the outcomes, you develop a sense of control. You feel empowered.

Indecision often leads to stress because it creates uncertainty, hesitation and fear of missed opportunities. Making a decision provides clarity and direction. You will experience forward momentum which lifts your spirits.  This contributes to a virtuous cycle of feeling better equipped next time a decision is needed.

You will enhance your critical thinking skills Decision-making is fundamentally a problem-solving activity. It requires gathering information, weighing options, considering potential outcomes, and selecting the best course of action. As you analyse situations, anticipate consequences, and balance risks and rewards you sharpen your brain.

You will increase your responsibility and accountability which contributes to a positive mindset because the sense of responsibility and agency empowers us. When we own our choices, we are more likely to follow through with actions and commitments. In leading and influencing, the ability to make and own decisions is essential for guiding others toward success.

You will improve time management and efficiency Indecision often wastes time and energy. We languish in procrastination and worry. By making decisions promptly and authentically, we rid ourselves of unnecessary stress.  Life takes energy, whether we are using it for problem-solving or for worrying about the problem.

I often consider that as I will be using valuable energy anyway, it is far more beneficial to use it in taking steps towards clarity and peace than in using it to go round in circles of overthinking and rumination!

You will cultivate resilience and adaptability when some of your decisions do not lead to the desired outcomes. This inevitable part of life builds resilience when you grow through the learning. People who are comfortable making decisions are better equipped to navigate uncertainty and bounce back from failures. They view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles. When you face setbacks, learn to adapt and find alternative solutions.

I have recently taken the decision to include strength-building through weight training into my routine. This decision was taken for the benefits of the desired outcomes, not because I enjoy it! Turns out I am beginning to enjoy it because I link the benefits (not yet realised) to the activity.

Transformational Questions:

  • What decision are you facing?
  • Link the benefits described above to your personal situation.
  • How does this shift your motivation about the decision?
  • What step can you take today towards reaping the benefits?
